Carl Helmers First WWW html kluge
"What one does as a first attempt to experiment with html..."

April 24, 2006 note: I wrote this text in 2002 in a crude form with no specialized WWW site tools.  It has been at helmers.com/carl as my only personal WWW presence until this April 2006 re-design and exploration of new tools [initially with Microsoft Front Page.  ]   I usually speak with Bob Frankston every year at an annual 3-day April microcomputer workshop in California.

Welcome to Carl Helmers'first personal WWW site...

I am a publishing entrepreneur whose forte is dreaming up, starting and operating computer and technology oriented advertising supported publications in any medium available that I know how to address.

I have created print magazines, then recently I have used what Virginia Postrel on her www.franklinsociety.org site calls "the 21st-century version of Benjamin Franklin's printing press, the Internet," to engage in anciliary WWW publishing for fun and profit...

April 6, 2002 I received an e-mail from Virginia asking me to participate in her nascent "Franklin Society" idea in the bubbling dynamism of the World Wide Web. As she was creating the www.franklinsociety.org site over that weekend a flurry of short e-mails ensued. In one of those e-mails, she remonstrated me for my lack of a personal WWW site to include in her listing of "Founding Members" of the Franklin Society.

Given Virginia's the Franklin Society impetus, I finally have a reason to get intimate with html personally. A couple of years ago, having lunch in Massachusetts with my longtime friendly acquaintance and colleague from the BYTE era, Bob Frankston, I had resisted his imploring me to learn html at the time. I saw no need to do so personally, since I have better things to do with my time [e.g. practicing my piano which I resumed in July 1999 when I started taking weekly lessons with Eric Stumacher at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music... (www.applehill.org)... I now play piano much better :-)>]

My helmers.com site, it turns out provides with no extra initial cost the opportunity to put up this simple www.helmers.com/carl site. Within limits of hard disk space at the margins of our systems. I will endeavor to keep adding original content as fits my muse... Stay tuned

I hastily concocted this initial posting after a quickly skimming an html tutorial book. I started with the html text that I copied from the Virginia's "www.franklinsociety.org" page. The only semantic content left from her page is the quote above; the format is the same. I edited and composed this initially with emacs and finally using Word 97 [as a .txt file renamed from .html] depending on the computer I used...

So, Virginia and Bob, and anyone else who perchance comes across my site, here is my first ever html expression circa my 54th birthday, April 19 2002. Carl Helmers, Peterborough NH, U.S.A., Earth, 2002 of the current era...
